Convent of the Sacred Heart seeks Lower School Associate Teacher candidates for Pre-Kindergarten who can serve the dual role of also being a Resident Substitute Teacher for grades Pre-Kindergarten to Fourth Grade.

The Associate Teacher Program in the Lower School is designed for college graduates enrolled in or who have completed a Master’s Program pursuing a career in teaching. This is a one-year position with the possibility of two years, depending upon enrollment.  Beginning late August 2018.



Pre-Kindergarten Associate Teacher:
  • The principle role of the Pre-Kindergarten Associate Teacher is to assist in the classroom by working with the Head Teacher and another Associate Teacher to achieve the best balance between teaching students and the demands of the Pre-Kindergarten program from 7:45am-12:00pm each day. Classroom management strategies, curriculum design, project-based instruction and differentiated instruction are all emphasized. Associate Teachers are expected to support classroom teachers with preparation of lessons and projects.
 
  • The Pre-Kindergarten Associate Teacher understands that Pre-Kindergarten students engage in play as a means to learning, approaches various tasks with creativity and imagination, and supports students in utilizing problem-solving strategies that enhance independence and self-motivation.Head Teachers are ultimately responsible for the academic program, parent conferences and conveying information about individual children to the parents. The Pre-Kindergarten Associate Teacher is expected to refer all questions from parents to the Head Teacher, who has primary accountability for reporting on the growth, learning style and behavior of the students. The Pre-Kindergarten Associate Teacher will share in these responsibilities by playing a supportive role.
 
  • The Pre-Kindergarten Associate Teacher will share routine tasks with the Head Teacher and will have additional responsibilities which include supervising at lunch and roof times and escorting children to and from specialty classes. Associate Teachers are considered members of the faculty and as such attend faculty and grade-level meetings as well as professional development days.
 
  • The liaison for Associate Teachers is the Head of the Mentoring Program. Associate Teachers will meet regularly with the Head of the Mentoring Program to discuss their progress as they begin teaching in the classroom and working with their Head Teachers. The Head of the Mentoring Program will also meet with the Head Teachers to discuss the progress of the Associate Teachers.

Resident Substitute:
 
  • The Resident Substitute is responsible for providing coverage in the afternoon (12-3:30pm) for Lower School Faculty who are absent as well as for assisting Head Teachers. This will occur after his/her responsibilities of being a Pre-Kindergarten Associate Teacher have concluded for the day.
  • The Resident Substitute’s afternoon schedule will vary daily.The Resident Substitute should be comfortable teaching various grade levels in the Lower School (Pre-Kindergarten-Fourth Grade).
 
  • The Resident Substitute should have exposure to different programs taught in the curriculum, such as Singapore Math and Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop from Teachers College.
