Lower School Associate Teacher
2018-2019

Convent of the Sacred Heart seeks Lower School Associate Teacher candidates for Grades K-2.

The Associate Teacher Program in the Lower School is a two-year teacher-training program designed for college graduates enrolled in a Master’s Program pursuing a career in teaching. Convent of the Sacred Heart is committed to being an equitable and inclusive community and seeks candidates who connect to our Mission and Goals.

  • The principle role of the Associate Teacher is to assist in the classroom working with the Head Teacher to achieve the best balance between teaching students and the demands of the grade program. Classroom management strategies, curriculum design, project-based instruction and differentiated instruction are all emphasized. Associate Teachers are expected to support classroom teachers with preparation of lessons and projects. If the Head Teacher is absent, the Associate Teacher is asked to assume the role as Head Teacher.
  • Head Teachers are ultimately responsible for the academic program, parent conferences and conveying information about individual children to the parents. The Associate Teacher is expected to refer all questions from parents to the Head Teacher, who has primary accountability for reporting on the growth, learning style and behavior of the students. The Associate Teacher will share in these responsibilities by playing a supportive role.
  • The Associate Teacher will share routine tasks with the Head Teacher and will have additional responsibilities which include supervising at lunch and roof times and escorting children to and from specialty classes. Associate Teachers are considered members of the faculty and as such attend faculty and grade-level meetings as well as professional development days.

The liaison for Associate Teachers is the Head of the Mentoring Program. Associate Teachers will meet regularly with the Head of the Mentoring Program to discuss their progress as they begin teaching in the classroom and working with their Head Teacher. The Head of the Mentoring Program will also meet with the Head Teachers to discuss the progress of the Associate Teachers. At the end of the first year, the Associate Teacher may be given more classroom responsibility at the discretion of the Head Teacher.

An equal opportunity employer, Sacred Heart seeks to hire outstanding and diverse faculty who work together harmoniously toward the common mission of the school.
