Middle School Academic Dean

The Convent of the Sacred Heart seeks an experienced candidate who has strong academic background and interpersonal skills who can work closely with the Head of Middle School to oversee the academic program in the middle school. In collaboration with the faculty and Head of Middle School, the Academic Dean’s role is to inspire and assist in supervising professional growth within the faculty and the success of each student. The Middle School Academic Dean manages the day to day running of the academic program in Middle School. The Academic Dean is a key position in the administration that ensures that the Goals and Criteria of the Convent of the Sacred Heart are implemented for the education of the whole child focusing on the academic life of the middle school students.

Required:

An understanding of the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart as well as the ability to articulate them.
Advanced Degree in Curriculum and/or Administration.
5-10 years experience.
Knowledge of Middle School Education.
Ability to work collaboratively.
Strong writing skills.
A demonstrated interest in promoting the academic success of students.
Evidence of professional growth with particular focus on improving academic preparation for students.
Ability to demonstrate inquiry based pedagogy

 

Preferred:

Previous Administrative experience.
Experience teaching at the middle/high school levels in mathematics or science
A demonstrated interest and previous experience in implementing a program of differentiated instruction in the classroom.
Ability to explain the results of standardized testing to the parent body.

 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Along with Department Chairs and Head of Middle School, assigns class coverage for teachers who are absent.
  • Works with faculty on developing curriculum and confer with Head of Middle School on curricular decisions.
  • Assists the Head of Middle School in planning curriculum nights.
  • Conducts ongoing and formal evaluation of teachers.
  • Works with Head of Middle School and Department Heads in the mentoring of new faculty.
  • Works with the Head of Middle School to create a schedule that is reflective of curricular priorities and meets the developmental needs of the middle school students.
  • Works with the Assistant Head of the Lower School and Upper School Dean of Studies to ensure a smooth transition of students from lower school to middle school and middle school to upper school.
  • Oversees the preparation and administration of all standardized testing.
  • Meets with parents to review results of standardized tests.
  • Works with the middle school teachers to implement the results of testing to improve curriculum.
  • Supports students who miss a significant number of academic classes due to an illness.
  • Assists the Head of Middle School with overseeing the process of report card writing, reading and editing progress reports.
  • Supports the Admissions Team in interviewing middle school candidates.
  • Member of Academic Team, which includes Department Chairs and the Head of Middle School, that determines policy and student placement in academic courses.
  • Supports the Head of Middle School in implementing all administrative decisions.
  • Conducts teacher and/or faculty meetings when appropriate.
  • Schedules and manages all examination periods, reviews study guides and exams, and meets with students to review study strategies and organizational plans.
  • Manages test calendars for middle school.
  • Along with Learning Specialist and Head of Middle School, monitors student progress at each grade level including recommending tutors or after school study buddies.
  • Works closely with the Head of Middle School when students are under academic review in the implementation of a structured study plan.
  • Assists Head of Middle School and Department Head in the hiring of new faculty.
  • Collaborates with Head of Middle School in setting/reviewing MS academic policies.
  • Academic Dean serves as a member of the Middle School Deans team.
  • Teaches one class.
