Lower School Science Associate Teacher
 

Convent of the Sacred Heart seeks a Lower School Science Associate Teacher for Grades Junior Kindergarten through Fourth Grade beginning late August 2019.

The Lower School Science Associate Teacher position in the Lower School is designed for college graduates enrolled in a Master’s Program pursuing a career in teaching.
The principle role of the Lower School Science Associate Teacher is to assist the Head Science Teacher in the Science Laboratory to achieve the best balance between teaching students and helping to prepare various activities for students in multiple grade levels. Classroom management strategies, curriculum design, project-based instruction and differentiated instruction are all emphasized. The Lower School Science Associate Teacher is expected to support the Head Science Teacher with preparation of lessons and projects. If the Head Science Teacher is absent, the Associate Science Teacher is asked to assume the role as Head Teacher.

Applicants for the Lower School Science Associate Position should:

  • Be enrolled in a Master’s Program in Early Childhood Education
  • Have a strong interest in Science and STEAM
  • Possess strong classroom management skills
  • Be prepared to support students while they conduct scientific investigations
  • Understand how to prepare the classroom in advance for laboratory activities
  • Be able to facilitate collaboration among students in small groups
  • Know how to design age appropriate inquiry-based lessons
  • Share students’ excitement about the wonders of the natural world

The Associate Teacher will share routine tasks with the Head Teacher and will have additional responsibilities which include supervising at lunch and recess times and escorting children to and from science classes. Associate Teachers are considered members of the faculty and as such attend faculty and grade-level meetings as well as professional development days.

The liaison for the Lower School Science Associate Teacher is the Head of the Mentoring Program. All Associate Teachers in the Lower School will meet regularly with the Head of the Mentoring Program to discuss their progress as they begin teaching in the classroom and working with their Head Teacher. The Head of the Mentoring Program will also meet with the Head Teachers to discuss the progress of the Associate Teachers. At the end of the first year, the Associate Teacher may be given more classroom responsibility at the discretion of the Head Teacher.
