Swim Teacher for Physical Education

Position: Swim Teacher for Physical Education
Reports to: Head of Athletics & Wellness
FLSA: Exempt, full time
Salary Range: $65,000 – $90,000 annually, commensurate with education and experience

Summary:
The Swim Teacher for Physical Education primarily works in the 55,000 ft Athletics and Wellness Center located at 406 East 91st Street in conjunction with the Aquatics Director and as a part of the school’s physical education team. They have primary responsibilities for the instruction of a quality aquatics program/swim school to serve the Sacred Heart students. They will also have additional opportunities as a swim coach (November - February) and the potential to teach land-based physical education classes and coach additional sports.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead introductory water safety and aquatics lessons for children Pre-K - 1st grade
  • Plan and instruct aquatics physical education classes providing diverse course offerings for students in grades 2-9, emphasizing safety, fun, and skill development
  • Supervise associate teachers when teaching lower school aquatics lessons
  • Lifeguarding assignments, locker room supervision, and bus duties as necessary and as assigned by the Head of Athletics & Wellness
  • Collaborate with the Aquatics Director to train student lifeguards and swim instructors in grades 10-12
  • Assist with land-based Physical Education classes as required for grades Pre-K - 8th grade
  • Evaluate and assess student performance in physical education classes
  • Coach a middle school or upper school swim team in the winter season (Nov - Feb) with the potential to coach another team in the fall and/or spring season
  • Communicate effectively with students and faculty about student progress
  • Collaborate and participate actively with the physical education department on innovative curriculum design and program development
  • ​Maintain good professional and collaborative relationships with colleagues
  • Attend department and faculty meetings
  • Commit to personal growth through active participation in professional development
Qualifications/Skills:
  • Bachelor's degree in Physical Education or related field, with Masters degree strongly preferred
  • Two years of relevant swim instruction experience with a youth-based aquatics program, with a proven history across different age ranges. Experience in a USA Swimming club program with technical knowledge of competitive swimming preferred.
  • A passion for swimming and developing young swimmers with a commitment to motivate swimmers of all backgrounds and abilities
  • The following certifications or similar:
    • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI)
    • CPR, AED, First Aid, and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Strong leadership, motivational, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Computer literacy and technological proficiency
  • Effective classroom management skills and a true passion for teaching
  • Knowledge of, appreciation for, and demonstrated commitment to anti-racist, anti-bias education, multicultural teaching, and culturally responsive pedagogy
  • Proficient with current educational technology, especially blended learning platforms, and strategies
  • A willingness and commitment to advance the goals and mission of Sacred Heart while adhering to the rules, policies, and regulations established by Sacred Heart and the Division of Athletics and Wellness is critical
  • The physical ability to perform routine pool duties, including lifting and moving pool supplies and equipment, including lane lines and touch pads, among other things
  • Experience in youth development through aquatics and aquatics safety
  • A demonstrated success as a swimming coach and instructor (2+ years of swimming coaching experience preferred, along with collegiate swimming experience)
  • Additional certifications, including Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) and CPR instructor desirable
  • Experience teaching lower, middle school, and upper school physical education, including familiarity with lesson planning, rubrics, and various assessment styles
  • A demonstrated, collaborative approach to working with other physical education team members in planning and implementing a balanced physical education program
